Knights of Columbus Council 9458 Meeting Minutes for January 3, 2012


For the Good of the Order, Lecturer, Brother Jack Robertson, talked about the language and how it pertains to the Church and the new translation of the Mass.

The Grand Knight called the meeting to order at 7:25 PM, leading the Council in prayer with John DeRubbo leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes from the Preceding Meeting:

Brother Jan Bessette read the minutes for Novembers’ meeting with no recommended changes.  Minutes were approved as read.

Admissions and Applications for New Members:

Brother Rick Pfohl stated there were no  new applications pending.  He did report Kevin Rackley completed the 1st degree on November the 8th.  He also commended the 1st degree team for their preparation and conducting the ceremony on a very short notice.

Grand Knights Report:

Grand Knight John Geist reported the November 5th 2011 shooting range event and the Councils 25th Anniversary celebration held 2 December 2011 were both very successful and enjoyable by all who attended.  He stated the picnic after at Brother Joe Kumphs’ home after the shooting range event was especially enjoyable and he conveyed his thanks to Brother Joe and his wife for their efforts put forth.

Grand Knight Geist said he was required by the District Deputy to provide a progress report on the first half of the Fraternal year.  He and the District Deputy were pleased  with the progress to date.  All items scheduled from July through December were completed ahead or on schedule.  The second half of the Fraternal years scheduled projects are on schedule as well.

Grand Knight Geist stated the Supreme data base continues to be updated and now contains the best available e-mail addresses as well as most degree information.  This data base will eventually be a huge assistance to the financial secretary.

Grand Knight Geist stated Michael McDunaugh is the new General Agent for the state.  The District agent is to be announced later.  He also stated the K of C State Grand Knights meeting is on the 7 January 2012.  Additionally the State convention will be held in Augusta in May of this year.

Treasurers Report:

Brother Dick Sands provided the treasurers reports for October. In addition, he provided a copy of the Novembers Financial Report.  A copy of each report is attached to the hard copy of each month’s respective minutes .  Upon completion of the report a motion to accept the reports was brought to the floor as presented and seconded.  Motion so carried by all council members.

Bills/Invoices read and Referred:

No bills or invoices were presented.

Communications Read
Grand Knight Geist  Read a letter from the Red Cross thanking the Knights for their participation and conducting the recent Red Cross Blood Drive.

Financial Secretary’s Report:

Brother Bob Pratt reported the Sparta cemetery cleanup was completed by Brothers Al Matysiak and Earl Tildon.  Thanks were given to both for their efforts.  The Council is looking to turn the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery over to the Greensboro Council.

Brother Pratt reported that billing of the dues will soon be done electronically and Membership cards will eventually be generated the same way.

Brother Pratt stated there were bicycles still available for repair if anyone was interested or desired to work on them.

Brother Pratt briefly discussed Roe vs Wade, stating the Council will assemble its’ usual display.  He will need help in setting up etc.  There will also be marches in Greensboro as well as Macon for those who wish to participate.

Trustees Report:

There was no Trustee Report, however; an audit is scheduled to be completed prior to Februarys’ meeting.

Unfinished Business:

Brother John DeRubbo reported there are several raffle tickets available for purchase.  Please see him after the meeting.

Old Busniess:

The Lady of Guadalupe ICON will be displayed in the District for three weeks in June, one week per council.  Mario De Laosa was selected as the point of contact w/Father Young to determine a fitting celebration for our Parish.

Brother Tom O’Neill expressed his thanks to those who participated in the PWID drive in Wilkerson County.  $800.00 was collected and a special thanks goes out to Joe Kumph who help with organizing the event.  Additionally, he gave Bob Chiplock a special thanks for collecting over $700.00 by himself at a festival in Gordon.

Brother Rick Pfhol reported that 42 contestants participated in the free throw contest.  This was fewer than in years past.  He said the District free throw contest will be held 12 February 2012 at the Walter B. Williams Center.  Help will be needed, thus, volunteers are solicited.  After the completion of the District  free throw championship, the State championship will be held in March 2012 with no site determined at this time.

New Business:

Grand Knight Geist expressed a desire to put together a story on some of the Councils accomplishments for publication in the Colombian magazine. He will work with Brother Dan Smith in pursuing this endeavor.  Some suggestions or subjects mentioned were the Rosary and the refurbishment of the Sacristy.

District Deputy Report:

District Deputy Fanell stated we are at the half way point of the fraternal year and should reflect on our accomplishments.  Our Council has had a strong showing thus far on all projects and have made large strides on administrative programs in an effort to eliminate unneeded paperwork etc.

District Deputy Fanell also reported that as a district, all councils are falling short on membership recruitment.  He urged us to think of things we haven’t done to help promote membership recruitment.

District Deputy Fanell presented a Vocation Sponsor Award to the Council and Brother Don Allen.

Under the Good of the Order:

Grand Knight Geist presented the “Knight of the Month Award” to Bob Chiplock and the “Family of the Month Award” was presented to Jan and Deena Bessette.
